Front Row at the White House
Helen Thomas
The Snooze Business -- Veteran journalist Helen Thomas is a "Washington Monument" and her memoir reminds me of a rushed, weekend visit to the nation's capitol during which swarms of tourists buzz from one historic place to the next without bothering to stop, to reflect, to gain any real insight or knowledge. The important thing to these tourist hordes, as well as to our intrepid UPI reporter, is simply "being there" -- and they all return home without anything of particular interest to say. Consider this, then, a 430-page postcard that recaps sights seen, presidents glimpsed, historic moments all-too-briskly and superficially observed. Oh, Helen, wish you were here!
